Westport – Nov 2nd, 2018 – Westport RTM Member and State Representative Candidate Greg Kraut (R-136) today stated “CT needs to improve our Gun Storage laws. Even though they are currently better than most states, we need to be a shining example of common sense storage safety to save lives.” “We need to model our storage laws on Massachusetts. They are the only state in the nation that requires that firearms be stored with a locking device in place in all cases when they are not in use. Massachusetts’ law requires individuals to securely store firearms in a locked container or equipped with a tamper-resistant mechanical lock or other gun safety device,” Kraut said. “I urge all Democrat and Republican Legislators in CT to pass legislation to further protect our citizens. These laws help our children or any prohibited persons, who could use the weapon to deadly effect. It will help reduce tragedies due to unintentional discharges, suicide, and gun theft,” Kraut said. This law is effective. Guns are used in just 9% of youth suicides in Massachusetts, compared to 39% of youth suicides nationally, and the overall suicide death rate among youth in Massachusetts is 35% below the national average.
“Rather than taking a wait and see attitude, we should be pro-active and vigilant in making us all safer,” Kraut said.
