Greg Kraut Proposes Tougher Pesticide Laws for Public Parks and Open Space – Will Propose Bill Once in Legislature

The CT legislature has already banned the use of the most toxic lawn chemicals on athletic fields. It’s time to extend that ban to state and municipal parks and forests where our children hike, explore and experience the natural environment.

WESTPORT – November 2nd, 2018 – Westport RTM Member and State Representative candidate Greg Kraut (R-136) today stated “Scientific studies suggest that weed killers such as glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup is linked to increased risk of lymphoma, endocrine disorders and increased risk of cancers in domestic pets. The CT legislature has already banned the use of the most toxic lawn chemicals on athletic fields. It’s time to extend that ban to state and municipal parks and forests where our children hike, explore and experience the natural environment.”

“Our parks and other public open spaces are important community assets, and we want to encourage our kids to spend more time outside. They should not be exposed to toxic chemicals when enjoying the great outdoors,“ Kraut said.

The irony is that extensive chemical pesticide use is not necessary or even effective to control invasive species in parks. One USDA study in Montana found that pesticide spraying increased the invasive leafy spurge while killing desirable native grasses.

“The long-term effects of pesticide exposure are so well documented that we cannot afford the risk to our children. That’s why one of my top priorities will be to introduce legislation to extend the pesticide ban,” Kraut said.
